Room to Breathe
by James Emery White
Text: Psalm 16:6
Topic: How to manage your money biblically
Big Idea:Every spending decision is a stewardship decision.
Keywords: Money; Stewardship; Tithing; Money, debt

Introduction:
  • Financial margins reveal an awful lot about your life.
  • Over 80 percent of all Americans owe more than they own.
  • We need margins, spaces between ourselves and our limits, in our lives in order to succeed.
  • The Bible has specific advice on how we can build our financial margins.
Tithing is the first margin.
  • The book of Malachi says that to not tithe is to rob God.
  • There's a special promise from God attached to this financial maneuver and investment.
  • To get God supernaturally involved in your financial life, you have to trust him.
Avoiding debt is the second margin.
  • Debt is deadly to margins, but it is easy to live beyond your means in today's society.
  • Illustration: A man buys a Rolex in a jewelry store, but his payment plan was so long that he'd end up paying twice the value because of the interest.
Saving for the future is the third margin.
  • Saving for the future is a strong and very specific theme throughout the Bible.
  • Scripture: Proverbs 21
Putting it into practice.
  • These margins need to be put into practice—not just
  • First, follow the principles; the reasons we don't are seldom because of money, but are almost always because of money management.
  • Secondly, be patient.
  • Third, take advantage of increases in income.
  • Fourth, start gradually.
    - Illustration: White and his wife, early on, got into debt and, though it took them time to get out of it, they eventually did.
  • Go to God and ask specifically for his help.
Conclusion
  • You may have never let God manage your financial life, most likely because you don't trust God.
  • God has never been tested and found untrustworthy. Test God's trustworthiness in terms of your daily life, and you won't be disappointed.
